As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread around the globe, it has left many niche businesses struggling in its wake. While the worst affected have had to close their doors completely, others have seized on some rather unique opportunities to pivot to another product or another sector entirely. The most successful of these have found a way to produce the products we need the most of during the pandemic.
Here’s a look at how three different Century Label clients recently adjusted their business models to produce hand sanitizer in the wake of COVID-19:
Creating Better Days
Primarily a creator of CBD-infused wellness products including oils, gummies, and tinctures, Creating Better Days adapted its business model to include a brand new company called APEX Offense. According to owner Taryn L. Nahm, “My 7-year-old daughter has cold-induced asthma, I was terrified of COVID affecting her lungs. If she got the virus, we would end up in the NICU. I desperately searched for hand sanitizer and was sickened at the price gouging.”
Along the way, however, Nahm found that her internal label printer was unable to meet the high demand and short timeline caused by these unique circumstances. Fortunately, Century Label was able to help; “The team at Century Label got us proofs within hours, we secured our order and got it within days. Their timeliness and efficiency were greatly appreciated. We were able to keep on our production schedule with their assistance—allowing us to produce more and quicker without any delays.”
Enfusia
While Enfusia was built to produce a range of bath and body products focused on the incorporation of essential oils, vitamins, and botanical extracts, it, too, pivoted to sanitizer production during COVID-19. “We are NSF-Certified and FDA registered, and we knew at some point the FDA would give waivers to companies like ours to assist in bridging the gap,” says Debra Myers of Enfusia. That gave the company the initial push to begin producing sanitizer and maintain production despite limitations in supplies caused by the surge in product demand.
Through the initial and continued challenges, Myers mentioned that the easiest part of her company’s pivot has been the branding and labeling of the new sanitizer product thanks to Century Label. “They have really been great, getting labels out the door so we can get products on the shelves. We've had a decades long relationship with Century Label, but it's in the tough times you know who your real suppliers are. They are right here with us!”
CK Products
As a large distributor and manufacturer of cake decorating, candy making, and kitchen tools and accessories, CK Products hardly seems like an ideal company to make the pivot to medical-grade sanitizers. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, that’s exactly what CK Products did. According to John Steadman, “The current economy created capacity in our production schedule. CK wanted to retain employees and fill a need that would help fight the spread of COVID-19.”
The transition needed to be rapid to address diminishing sanitizer supplies. “In just a few weeks we had secured supply of the main ingredients, created packaging, and brought on new customers.” He attributes much of the quick turnaround to Century Label’s speedy labeling process: “Century Label helped CK by getting our label orders first in line so we could keep moving quickly.”
